This is a scene from the tragic story, “The Little Mermaid”. The little mermaid’s sisters have given their hair to the sea witch in exchange for a dagger that can free their sister from her doomed agreement with Ursula. All she has to do is plunge the dagger into the heart of the prince she loves who is about to marry another woman. This painting shows the tension of conflicting choices. The little mermaid clutches her hands to her breast, torn between returning with her sisters to the ocean or killing the man she sacrificed for. She must decide which sacrifice to honor, her sisters’ or her own. Should she use the dagger?
